Trial-Lawyers Make Louisiana "Judicial Hellhole" for 13th Year in a Row

For the 13th year in a row, the American Tort Reform Foundation's annual "Judicial Hellholes" Report lists Louisiana as among the worst legal climates in the country, once again citing meritless coastal lawsuits pushed by big-money trial lawyers.

The report details the negative impacts of the trial-lawyers war on jobs in Louisiana, including:

  • $4.7 Billion in Economic Losses

  • $3 Billion in Lost Wages

  • 46,300 job losses

  • $1,000 hidden "tort-tax" for every single Louisianan

Chief among the reasons for Louisiana once again ranking as a Judicial Hellhole are the never-ending coastal lawsuits pushed by trial-lawyer John Carmouche, as well as the hundreds of millions of dollars in ads aired by trial-lawyers in the state, the 5th most in the nation- despite Louisiana's relatively small size. Carmouche, of course, has heavily contributed to that total with his misleading ads in support of his coastal lawsuits.

The report goes into further detail looking about how a proposed settlement in one of the coastal-lawsuit cases hurts Louisiana's standing, creating a political slush fund where tens of millions of dollars could be directed to projects unrelated to the coast- as has already happened in similar settlements.

Another reason cited for Louisiana's low-ranking is judicial misconduct, including scandals involving judges and the lack of transparency surrounding how the judiciary handles those cases.
